Hello, parents/guardians!
For the month of December, I have presented the Dragon Riders of Ms. Carroll's First Grade Class with a challenge. I would like the class to do 50 hours of work on the following two programs: Khan Academy and Lexia Core 5.
Here is how this challenge will go:
BEFORE DECEMBER 1ST: Students will have a letter sent home with their log in information for both programs. Please log in, test it out, and let me know of any questions you have before the challenge starts! This way, we can make sure that we are all prepared.
DECEMBER 1ST: Students will start their challenge! I will send home a log for the parent to fill out. For each hour your student does of either program, they will earn the class a jewel. This hour doesn't need to be done all at once; it can be 15 minutes each day- that adds up! When students turn in their logs, we put those hours in our jar.
OUR GOAL: When the whole class earns 15 jewels, we get a special class treat. When the whole class earns 50 jewels, we earn a movie party! Our hope is to earn a movie party in December, but the challenge can be extended if needed.
Note: Participation in the challenge is highly recommended, but optional. These programs are very beneficial to students, and when he have done them in class, the kids LOVED them! I do, however, recognize that access to computers and internet at home might be limited, so I am NOT requiring it as official homework.

Khan Academy
What is Khan Academy?
In our class, we use Khan Academy for extra practice math practice. Khan Academy is set up to see what a student can do, and build off of it. It gives me, as a teacher, information on what students need more practice on, or what students have mastered. It is set up so that if a student is confused on a question, there is a video to help them! Pretty cool! How does my student log in? In general, there is a "login" button at the top right hand corner of the browser or app. I have tested this in a browser and on an Apple iPad, but have not yet tested it on an Android Tablet. Below, I will attach a letter that has more information. Can my student do this on their own?
The goal is to eventually have students do this work independently. Earlier in the year, as the students learn to read, they will need some support to read the questions. Later in the year, as they get used to the app and become better readers, they may be able to do it on their own. How do I get there? Lexia
What is Lexia Core 5?
Lexia is program designed to help students learn to read by using a game platform. Students play the phonics-based games, and work to level up. Like Khan Academy, it meets the student where they are at, giving them content that is just challenging enough. How does my student log in? On the app, the screen will immediately come up to log in. Please use the log in information I sent home with your student. In the browser, it should bring up the log in screen as well. Students have used the iPad app multiple times per week in my class, and should know what to do! Welcome Letter to Parents: Can my student do this on their own?
Yes, they can! This program is built with sound so that the student is able to have verbal instructions from the program. How do I get there?
